Prix Pictet 2011

American Power by Mitch Epstein

Mitch Epstein has won this year’s Prix Pictet, the international photography prize that is fast establishing itself as the only prize to win. Announced in Paris and handed out by the natty Kofi Annan, past winners of the three-year old prize include Benoit Aquin and Nadav Kander, who was also on jury duty this year.

The Prix Pictet concerns itself with themes of sustainability and environment. After Water and Earth, this year’s theme was, quite fittingly, Growth. From Michael Wolf’s hypnotic Hong Kong housing blocks (a personal favourite) to Edward Burtynsky’s epic landscapes, this year’s images are a sublime mix of the brutal and the beautiful.

All the work can be seen here or through this excellent dispatch from Monocle.
